World Oceans Day

it’s important, you sea?

June 8, 2022 is World Oceans Day–a day to remind us the importance the ocean plays in our daily lives. Did you know these facts about the ocean1?

-the ocean covers more than 70% of the earth

50% of the planet’s oxygen is produced by the ocean

-oceans absorb about 30% of carbon dioxide produced by humans

let’s do our part!

We can do our part to limit humans negative impact on the oceans and ocean life by making simple choices each day. Below are some ideas on how we can take a stand for our oceans.

ditch single use plastics. 8-9 million metric tons of plastic end up in our oceans each year2. reusable water bottles, grocery bags, snack containers, and more are easier to find and use than ever.

don’t release balloons. ever. it’s estimated that more than 100,000 marine animals die from plastic entanglement or ingestion each year3. balloons are easily confused as jellyfish and ingested or the strings cause animals to be trapped and tangled.

clean up after yourself. sounds silly, but so often beachgoers leave behind tremendous amounts of trash. In May of 2020 one Florida beach reported 12,000 pounds of trash was left behind in one month’s time4. if you take a trip to the sea, take your trash, don’t leave it be.
